Sachin Tendulkar: the second person to slam a double century in an ODI

So, Sachin Tendulkar has scored a double century! And, as a die-hard Sachin fan, I’m bursting with joy!

But there’s a problem: several media sources are reporting that “Sachin Tendulkar scored the first ever double century in one-day international cricket”. Well, that’s not really true.

The first ever double century in one-day international cricket was scored by Belinda Clark of Australia. As the captain of the Australian women’s cricket team, she scored 229 not out against Denmark at Mumbai during the 1997 Women’s Cricket World Cup.

Here’s a comparison of Belinda’s 229 n.o. and Sachin’s 200 n.o.:

Well, first double ton or not, Sachin’s 200 was an extraordinary innings, and the Sachin fans at SPJIMR had a great time today! Here are snaps of the moments leading to Sachin’s 200, at SP Jain’s Boys Hostel canteen:

48.6 Dhoni keeps the strike by taking single. Sachin fans not amused

49.1 Dhoni slams a six. Angry Sachin fans beat up the lone Dhoni fan in the crowd

49.3 Charl Langeveld runs up

Sachin's double century is here! It's time to celebrate!

You are forgetting that whenever we talk about records – we talk about men’s team. This stands true specially for a game like cricket. I haven’t heard a single time that a player from men’s team broke a record of a player from women’s team. When we say highest runs, wickets, catches etc.. we always talk about men’s team. This might not be true in other sports like tennis, athletics etc. where women have more presence.

There might be many more fronts (in cricket) where women must have performed better than men.

First double century by a person…………
    Before Sachin…There was Belinda!

    Belinda Clark, Australia – 229* – 155 Balls Strike Rate: 147.74
Vs Denmark in 1997, ICC Women’s World Cup

    ——————————————————————————–

    Sachin Tendulkar, India – 200* – 147 Balls Strike Rate: 136.05
    Vs South Africa in 2010

Also please have a look at the level of the opposition. Womens cricket has a higher scoring rate as compared to mens cricket. 300 is to womens cricket was 225 was to mens cricket some 7 years ago. another example .. In domestic league games in India esp school level etc.. a par score is 400. I have read reports of teams scoring 550 in 50 overs.
So it does not make sense to compare scores across such varied levels of competition. First Class cricket and international cricket(mens) are closely comparable but still not perfect
